Ossario Germanico di Colle Pion
Museum | Pinzano Al Tagliamento | Friuli-Venezia Giulia | Italy
The "Ossario Germanico di Colle Pion" in Pinzano al Tagliamento is an unfinished mausoleum that was originally supposed to house the remains of about 30,000 German and Austro-Hungarian soldiers who fell during the Battle of Tagliamento on November 1, 1917. Construction began in 1939 under the direction of engineer Robert Tischler, but was never completed due to the events of World War II.
The structure, made of stone, Veronese marble, concrete, and bricks, is located on Colle Pion and offers an impressive view of the Tagliamento Valley. Although the mausoleum never housed the intended remains, it remains a significant memorial to the victims of war.
Surrounding the ossuary are additional historical relics, including post-World War II fortified positions and a viewpoint that offers a spectacular view of the Tagliamento River and the surrounding landscape.
A visit to the ossuary allows visitors to engage with the history of the Battle of Tagliamento during World War I and to appreciate the significance of this site as a memorial to the fallen.
